Commercial Recycling Regulations

Commercial Recycling Is The Law!

California’s Mandatory Commercial Recycling Law (AB 341) requires businesses and multifamily properties to recycle. The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and keep valuable materials out of landfills. Since the commercial sector generates most of California’s waste, this law helps businesses become part of the solution, while also saving money on disposal costs.

Who Must Recycle?

Who Must Recycle?

Businesses and public entities that generate 4 cubic yards or more of solid waste per week are required to comply. This includes:

  • Offices, restaurants, schools, nonprofits, and government facilities
  • Strip malls, industrial buildings, and other commercial properties
  • Multifamily properties with 5 or more units, regardless of waste volume

Benefits of Commercial Recycling

  • No additional cost for single-stream recycling
  • Lower disposal bills when you recycle more and reduce garbage service
  • Use the CalRecycle Commercial Climate Calculator to estimate your financial and environmental impact

What Can Be Recycled?

Most businesses participate in single-stream recycling, which allows for mixed paper, bottles, cans, and more to be placed in the same bin.

  • Recycling guidelines may vary based on your materials
