Composting Odor/Insect Prevention Tips

Simple tips to prevent odor, rodents, and insects in your compost and yard waste carts

Pests and odors can be kept to a minimum with regular emptying and cleaning of your green cart. Remember, you’re not creating more organic waste, just placing it in a different container.

  • Line the bottom of your cart with newspaper to absorb liquids, reduce odors, and make cleanup easier
  • Freeze food scraps and place them in the cart the night before pickup, ideally in a brown paper bag
  • Cover loose food scraps with newspaper to help contain moisture and smells
  • Always keep the lid closed to prevent rodents or animals from getting inside
  • Use natural cleaners like lemon juice, white vinegar, baking soda, or water to clean the cart
  • Consider sprinkling Diatomaceous Earth, a safe, natural deodorizer and insect repellent, inside the cart to help with odors and pests

With a few simple steps, your green cart can stay fresh, clean, and easy to use year-round.
